The Justice in Aging Data for Equity Fellowship was created by the LeadingAge LTSS Center @UMass Boston and Justice in Aging, a legal advocacy nonprofit.
Mentorship is at the heart of a unique new fellowship program that Justice in Aging, a legal advocacy nonprofit, created in partnership with the Boston office of the LeadingAge LTSS Center @UMass Boston.
The Justice in Aging Data for Equity Fellowship provides annual support for a gerontology graduate student at the University of Massachusetts Boston. The student’s research must align with Justice in Aging’s mission to use the law to fight poverty among older adults. Working with a faculty mentor, the graduate student will train Justice in Aging staff members on data literacy and analysis.
“Strong, actionable data is critical for our work to advance equity in aging and will be a powerful tool for us to create and recommend policies to target resources to older adults facing structural discrimination,” says Denny Chan, managing director for equity advocacy at Justice in Aging.
UMass Boston doctoral candidate Andrew Alberth, who has experience in community activism and coalition building, is the program’s inaugural fellow.
“We’re very proud to launch this partnership,” says Marc Cohen, co-director of the LTSS Center. “It’s a win-win to support an organization whose mission is closely aligned with ours while also supporting a doctoral student and faculty member and giving them a unique applied research and mentoring opportunity.”
