The LeadingAge LTSS Center @UMass Boston conducts research to help our nation address the challenges and seize the opportunities associated with a growing older population.
The LTSS Center is the first organization of its kind to combine the resources of a major research university with the expertise and experience of applied researchers working with providers of long-term services and supports (LTSS).
LeadingAge and the University of Massachusetts Boston established the LTSS Center in 2017. This joint venture expands the capacity of both organizations to translate research into policy and practice.
We strive to conduct studies and evaluations that will serve as a foundation for government and provider action to improve quality of care and quality of life for the most vulnerable older Americans.
The LTSS Center, with offices in Washington DC and Boston, MA, builds on UMass Boston’s partnership with Community Catalyst, a national consumer health advocacy organization.
Who We Are
The LeadingAge LTSS Center @UMass Boston blends the expertise of academic researchers at the University of Massachusetts Boston, and applied researchers at LeadingAge.
LTSS Center researchers bring an extraordinary depth of knowledge and experience to a variety of issues affecting older Americans and providers of long-term services and supports. As LTSS Center Fellows, they work together to enhance policy and practice in the field of long-term services and supports (LTSS).
The mission of LeadingAge is to be the trusted voice for aging.
LeadingAge’s 6,000-plus members and partners include:
- Nonprofit organizations representing the entire field of aging services,
- 38 state associations, and
- Hundreds of businesses, consumer groups, foundations, and researcher centers.
The University of Massachusetts Boston is home to one of the oldest and most distinguished gerontology programs in the country.
- Its faculty conducts extensive research in the field of aging.
- It leads academic programs for undergraduate, graduate, and PhD students in the field of gerontology.
Community Catalyst is a national nonprofit advocacy organization.
- It works to build the consumer and community leadership required to transform the American health system.
- It believes this transformation will happen when consumers are fully engaged and have an organized voice.

The LeadingAge LTSS Center @UMass Boston strengthens the capacity of both organizations to explore and find solutions to the most pressing issues facing older Americans, and to influence and improve policy and practice in the field of aging services.
Leading Age and UMass Boston believe strongly that, working together, we can do more to build an evidence base for promising practices in the LTSS field than either organization could accomplish alone.
The partnership between our organizations is unique because it creates valuable linkages between frontline caregivers, LTSS administrators and managers, government agencies, policy makers, and researchers.
These stakeholders all care deeply about older adults, but they work in different settings, use different language, and even attend different conferences.
The LeadingAge LTSS Center @UMass Boston is dedicated to bringing these stakeholders together to address the opportunities and challenges facing older consumers and the organizations that design and deliver services and supports to our rapidly aging population.
